An unexpected delay left passengers stranded for over an hour in Bicske, Hungary, when a train stopped due to the expiration of the driver's shift. The MÁV, Hungary's national railway company, clarified the reason behind the interruption, emphasising compliance with strict operational regulations.
On the evening of 4th October, passengers aboard the MÁV 4921 service from Tata to Budapest experienced a prolonged halt in Bicske. According to reports from local sources, the issue was neither a technical fault nor a traffic disruption, but rather, it was due to the train driver's working hours which legally could not be extended beyond their set limit.
A statement from the MÁV explained that the driver had nearly reached the maximum allowed duty time of 10 hours, necessitating the cessation of the journey until a replacement could arrive. While the train remained stationary, the conductor informed travellers of the situation, leading many to opt for a subsequent service to continue their journey to Budapest, which eventually delayed their arrival by an hour.

The railway company further elaborated that the driver's handover was delayed by external factors, namely a previous incident involving a collision near Tatabánya, which had caused widespread disruptions in the region's rail traffic. MÁV assured the public that they had tried to expedite the arrival of a substitute driver, who could ensure compliance with the regulatory framework governing train operations.
MÁV has made it clear that contrary to some reports, at no point did the initial driver abandon the train. Instead, they maintained basic services on board, such as electricity, to ensure lighting, heating, and the functioning of the doors, while awaiting their colleague's arrival.
This event has sparked a broader discussion about the balance between operational regulations and passenger convenience. However, MÁV stands by its decision, citing the necessity to uphold safety standards and legal obligations as paramount.
The railway operator is seeking the understanding of passengers, highlighting that such regulations are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of both staff and the public on Hungary's railways.
