A fire that broke out at the Keleti Railway Station in Budapest last Friday evening caused significant disruptions, with one rail employee hospitalised due to smoke inhalation. The incident primarily affected a locomotive used for heating purposes, while the flames partially spread to an adjacent locomotive.

According to the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), the fire broke out on a sidetrack and initially involved a single locomotive. Quick-thinking MÁV employees heroically rescued over 30 passenger carriages, which were at risk of being engulfed by the fire. Despite the damage to two locomotives, rail services resumed normal operations less than two hours after the incident. The efforts of the railway workers were highlighted in a video shared by MÁV on their social media, demonstrating the cooperation and bravery exhibited at the scene.

Hegyi Zsolt, the CEO of MÁV, expressed gratitude to the railway workers for their decisive and effective response, which helped avoid far greater losses. During the rescue operations, one of the shunting leaders fell ill and was transported to the hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. This individual is currently receiving medical care.

The Budapest Disaster Management agency reported that 22 professional firefighters and volunteer firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze. A total of seven fire engines were dispatched to the site to assist in extinguishing the flames.

The fire incident is under ongoing investigation to determine its causes. Meanwhile, the MÁV continues to offer services without further interruption, thanks to the diligence of its staff. As the situation unfolds, it sheds light on the crucial roles played by emergency responders and railway personnel in managing unexpected hazards efficiently.
